Our Lady of Guadalupe

This painting is based on the classic image of Mother Mary as she appeared to Juan Diego in the 1500's in Mexico, directing him to build her a cathedral. When he went before the bishop and opened his mantle to show the rose petals, which had miraculously bloomed in the winter at her feet, her image had appeared on his mantle.
